Transcription Services for Academicians

What is that first thing that just pops up in your mind when you come across transcription services? – I am sure you will start imagining medical offices & court rooms! However, things have gone through a complete transformation with time; nowadays, it is not just restricted to court rooms or hospitals.
General transcription services have now expanded – It has become a multi-disciplinary industry, with a lot of diversified and numerous offshoots. Among these many offshoots; academic transcription is gaining tremendous pace – Over a period of time, it has proved to be exceptionally beneficial particularly for academicians and students, alike.
Let us explore and dig deeper into the world of academic transcription and learn how it makes the life of academicians and student smoother and less stressful.

For Students:

·         Taking notes during an ongoing lecture is a cumbersome job for most students. Most of the time, students have to focus completely on getting all the relevant points written down – and more often they try to capture professor’s exact words in order to not miss any critical points.
·         And while doing so, sometimes, students have to leave the sentences mid-way in order to jot down the next key point. Later, when they review the notes, half of it seems missing; making it difficult to understand on a later stage.
·         This ultimately results into lot of distress and extra work on the part of the students. It is here that transcriptionists offer a solution – You can send the recorded audio clips of lectures to professional transcription service providers. These clips are then transcribed and converted into written words; well-presented in an easy-to-read format.
·         The time and efforts, that a student you have to, put in for connecting the dots would come down considerably; giving them ample time to actually studies. Moreover; students can have all critical points jotted down at one place; therefore, they can prepare the subject by highlighting all the important concepts and also adding additional notes. Last, but not the least, the student could be confident enough, since the fears of anything missing will not bother them.

For Professors/Educators

·         Not only students, even the professors can benefit a lot from academic transcription. Professors or educators who adopt transcription in their routines benefit a lot; it allows them to assess their own lectures giving them an insight into their work and flaws – if any; providing a room for improvement.
·         With such (self) evaluation; the professors/educators help make (positive) changes in their teaching methods; contributing to their service records!
·         Moreover, as an educator; you can offer a helping hand to the students who have to miss the class due to any inevitable circumstances; by giving them complete, unabridged written transcript of the lecture.
·         In other words, academic transcription services can prove to be a blessing for both the students and educators; by helping to shed the unnecessary burden and channelize the notes to get the optimum benefits.
·         Instructors can enhance their effectiveness by offering the students with the written transcripts of their lectures. And the students can also manage their time effectively, and, ultimately, raise their bars; climbing ladder of success.

How to extract audio from video files

While we accept either audio or video files for transcription, clients on the other hand may be in a big hurry lots of times, or may have a slower internet connection for whatever reason, and so handling and uploading audio files which are smaller in size, gets much easier for them. There are plenty of easy ways to extract audio from video, some of which we are going to share today for the benefit of our readers and clients.

One of the easiest ways to convert video to audio is if you’re using any sound editing software, for example Sound Forge or Sony Vegas, you can simply open the video file, and then “Save As” an MP3 file or any of the number of different audio formats. If not, then here are some free and equally easy ways to extract audio from video files:

1. Extracting the sound from a video with VLC
Click on Media, scroll to Advanced Open File.
In the File Tab, click on Add and select the video.
Click the Convert button
On the next window, enter the output path.
Select the encapsulation method WAV.
Once the WAV file is created, it is possible to convert it to a number of formats, including MP3.

2. Audacity:
Audacity is one of the best known open source (free) audio editing software and cross-platform, meaning it has versions for Windows, Mac and Linux. While there may not be a direct way to do it, this software is very feature rich, and can be used to extract audio from certain video file types.

3. IExtractMP3:
You can Google the name of this software and then download it from there. This one is for Apple Mac users, and it can extract the sound from FLV files. It doesn’t reduce the quality of audio while extracting it.

4. Pazera Audio Extractor:
Link here. This is free software to extract audio from video files. As of now, it works with Windows only and can extract audio from a variety of file formats like AVI, WMV, VOB, MP4 and more. The output formats could be MP3, WAV, WMA, AAC etc. The best thing about this software is that it comes with some pre-defined settings, and is straightforward and very easy to use. You can even use it to convert audio from one format to another.

How Transcription Helps Learners with Special Needs

Transcription is something you’ve probably heard about, at least when it comes to business. The fact is that a lot of businesses – from entertainment companies to attorneys – make use of transcription services to keep costs down and make work more efficient.

Believe it or not, there are other uses for transcription services as well. For example, academic transcription can help a lot of students get their work done and work on a higher level than they otherwise would. When it comes to academic transcription, some of the top users are special needs students.

Keep reading to learn more about the benefits of academic transcription for special needs students. Whether you can benefit from transcription services or someone you know could, it can be the right answer for many special needs individuals looking to further their education.
Improved Accessibility
Perhaps the biggest thing transcription services can do for special needs students is to make learning materials considerably more accessible. While teachers may not be able to easily communicate lessons and lesson plans to some students with learning disabilities, using transcription services can make that possible.
Transcription also allows special needs students to hand in work and communicate with teachers in an effective way. For many special needs students, transcription services make education possible in areas and fields where it simply wouldn’t be available otherwise.
Multimedia Options
One of the big things for many people who need to take classes in a field is the ability to get lessons on time. When teachers are able to translate their lectures into text, they have multimedia options for their students to learn and participate.
Many teachers, classes and universities can turn around lectures in less than 48 hours when they are using high-quality transcription services. For special needs students, that means a lot less time falling behind and the ability to keep up with the rest of the class.
In many classes, teachers can even have their lectures done ahead of time so that special needs students can have text in class or sent to them before the lecture occurs.

Interview Transcription Recording Guide

Imagine the scenario: you have set up an appointment to interview someone; you arrive, set up your recording equipment and spend some productive time getting some great material from the interviewee. However, upon checking the recording later you find there is so much background noise that you can hardly hear what the interviewee is saying.

Qnex Audio Transcription & Typing Services gives the following advice for recording interviews for transcription.

·   Check out your recording equipment before your interview(s) is scheduled. Play with your equipment, become familiar with it. Try recording yourself and experiment with the distance of the microphone.

·   If possible practice recording your interview in the location where the interview will actually take place this will give you a good idea of the acoustics in that location:

·     placing the mic on a soft surface e.g. a cushion can improve the sound quality

·     carpeted rooms reduce echo

·     Listen to your practice interview recording using headphones. It may sound completely different to the way it sounds on the device.

·   An interview recording with a very low volume can be as troublesome to an interview transcriber as a recording with a noisy background so try to ensure that the finished interview recording can be turned up to an audible level without distortion.

·    Choose the quietest environment available to you; a busy restaurant is not an ideal environment for carrying out an interview that you will be sending to an interview transcriber.

·      Turn off mobile phones. When a mobile phone searches for network coverage it interferes with recording equipment and can obscure voices even when set to silent or vibrate modes.

·     Do not use voice activation when recording your interviews as words can be lost if there is a slight delay.

Remember, the clearer the recording the more accurate and complete the interview transcription will be.

Interview recordings can take hours to transcribe so if you have the choice of using a professional transcriber,Qnex Audio Transcription & Typing Services can help you to keep up the pace.

Contact Audio Transcription & Typing Services for an interview transcription quote by visiting the contact page to complete the form or drop us an email with your requirements. We will provide a prompt interview transcription quotation for your consideration.

How to Proofread Your Transcriptions

When a transcriptionist simultaneously listens to an audio file and types a business transcript, mistakes can happen — particularly because of the fast pace. How can you catch the errors? In this article, Qnex transcription describes how to perform transcription proofreading.

Why Proofread?

As the saying goes, “Everyone makes mistakes.” Because business transcription is not immune to errors, transcription proofreading serves as a “safety net” to catch the errors before the client receives the final document — improving accuracy, consistency, punctuation, grammar and spelling in the process.
An experienced transcription proofreader should perform the following tasks:
  • Eliminates repetition
  • Corrects words used in the wrong context
  • Removes filler words such as “Ahh” and “Well”
  • Provides a seasoned set of eyes for a “second look”
Proofreading of business transcripts adds value by making an overall review of error sources involving consistency and clarity — especially critical for longer transcripts.

How to Proofread Transcriptions

While many individuals are adept at proofreading text files before finalizing a document, transcription proofreading involves different skills — watching video files or listening to audio files. A typical approach to transcription proofreading involves listening to the same video or audio file used to formulate the original transcription. In addition, the transcription proofreader is responsible for the following tasks:
  1. Performs the final quality check
  2. Formats the document as stipulated by the client — for example, specific fonts, paragraph headers and adding or removing page numbers
  3. Fills in any missing phrases or words overlooked by the original transcriptionist
  4. Checks for textual mistakes and grammatical errors

The Benefits of Careful Re listening

As someone once observed, “You can learn a lot by listening.” When transcribing a recording, there are also significant benefits that accrue from listening again.
With transcribing there is often a temptation to either eliminate or reduce the time and effort dedicated to transcription proofreading. While considerations such as transcription cost vs quality and maximum output in minimum time must be taken into account, business owners and managers should not overlook the value of producing a business transcript that represents your company positively — eliminating mistakes and errors wherever possible.
Above all, avoid treating the step of transcription proofreading as a “rubber stamp” of the earlier transcription. Make sure that you assign dedicated listeners and proofreaders in order to improve the transcription.

The Business Value of Transcription Proofreading

Both business transcription and transcription proofreading are more difficult than often realized by corporate leaders and managers. First and foremost, digital recordings are almost always subject to a wide variety of challenges — use of scientific terms, unusual names, multiple speakers (often speaking at the same time), accents, speaking in inaudible tones, unclear voices, background noise and variable audio quality.
Second, even experienced transcriptionists are likely to make mistakes due to typing at a high speed. How will you catch the errors without transcription proofreading?
Third, transcripts often represent “informal minutes” of important business functions such as presentations, conferences and interviews. Stakeholders such as clients, employees, investors and suppliers will often use a business transcript to form their impression of your company. What are your transcripts saying about your business image and quality?

Proofreading Is a Skill

Like many skills, transcription proofreading is acquired and honed through constant practice. This is one of the major benefits derived by working with an experienced global transcription expert such as Qnex transcriptions — business transcribing is what we do for a living! We have a dedicated professional team of business transcribers.

The Usefulness of Media Transcription

A media transcription company has the ability to transcribe any form of audio into written text. The ability to have written transcripts is useful in so many ways. Video and audio is very extensive with current technology; however, the need is to convert audio files into written form is great and growing.
